La plazuela recibe el nombre de San Marcos Mexicalztingo ,por el Templo y el ex-convento dedicado a San Marcos Apôstol, fue construido encima del edificio principal del altépetl por los frailes franciscanos en 1560, quienes destruyeron este centro ceremonial mexica para imponer sobre este territorio su fe y aprovechar el material de lo ya construido .
