El restaurante se ubicaba originalmente donde hoy está el palacio de Bellas Artes, pero tras la construcción del palacio, el restaurante tuvo que ser reubicado a la calle 16 de Septiembre en el centro, momento en el cual Don Lázaro Álvarez García, quien también provenía del poblado Prendes en Asturias, toma posesión por completo del lugar. Años después Enrique Álvarez Flores, hijo de Don Lázaro Álvarez, entró a trabajar a Prendes, con tan solo 12 años.
Las leyendas cuentan que un día Pancho Villa entró a caballo al restaurante, y personajes como la doña, María Félix, era también asidua. Diego Rivera también forma parte de la historia del lugar, ya que gracias a su gusto por los gusanos de maguey, el Prendes se convirtió en el primer restaurante de México en servirlos.
Walt Disney, Frida Kahlo, Venustiano Carranza, Octavio Paz, Dr. Atl, entre otros, han pasado por este lugar, mismo que hoy regresa con renovados bríos, para reclamar su lugar en la historia de México.
Prendes… el regreso de una leyenda. El 1º de Septiembre de 2016, el Prendes re abre sus puertas en el palacio de los palacios: El Palacio de hierro de Polanco.
El filete “Prendes”, los sesos a la mantequilla negra, los gusanos de Maguey y los escamoles a la hidalguense, son solo algunos de los platillos del menú original, que están presentes en la carta actual. Entre las opciones novedosas están exquisitos cortes de carne premium.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Prendes is usually a very good place to eat but today I had the salmon Prendes which is really good but this time it was drowning in balsamic vinegar. So basically no taste besides vinegar.
Rather than that small detail, food is generally very good and the place is nice, has nice outdoor seating too!

The food is great and well served. The prices are truly moderate and the wine list pretty accesible.
