The area currently occupied by Puerto Escondido was not inhabited by indigenous groups in pre-Hispanic times or by Spaniards during the colony. However, the bay of the port was known at first as the "Bay of the Hidden Woman", and later as the "Bahia de la Escondida". Legend has it that the pirate Andrew Drake, alleged brother of Francis Drake (1543-1596), anchored his ship in the bay when the area was completely uninhabited, to rest for a few days without being disturbed by the viceregal authorities.[6] A few weeks earlier, he and his crew kidnapped a young Mixtec girl from the village of what is now Huatulco and took her with them to these beaches. However, the woman managed to escape from the cabin in which she was trapped and jumped overboard to reach the shore, where she would later hide in the jungle, far from the beach. The pirates tried to find her, but they couldn't. Over time they began to refer to the woman as "La Escondida". Andrew and his crew returned many times to look for her and never found her; This is why, it is said, that the bay was baptized as "La Escondida". Now it is known as Puerto Escondido.
