A beautiful place outside of Xcalak. A place to disconect from the rest of the world and reconect with nature. Perfect for kayaking, birding, swiming or just hang out on the beach and relax.

Stayed here, by myself, for 12 days in January (had booked for 14, tho--turned out that "roughing it" was only fun for a maximum of 11 days; then was ready for a hot shower and some a/c (or at least a fan). Firstly--the beach is awesome: most of the time, you'll feel like you're in your own, secluded paradise. Snorkeling is fantastic: lots of coral mounds with tons of fish, lobsters, conch, stingrays and nurse sharks. Seaweed became an issue only in the last couple of days of my stay. Note, however, that because there is no real sandy beach in Xcalak, the owners basically "rent" the beach out to people in the hotels for day use (so one minute you feel like a castaway, next you have families with kids running around the relatively small area of beachfront ?). Hosts/caretakers, Ramiro & Marie, are great. I don't speak Spanish much, and they don't speak English at all but, some clever hand signs, along with Google Translate, really helped us get along great. They stay on the property in their own little shack by the entrance. The owning family was also great--my mother freaked out when I didn't contact her upon arrival (no cell signal and no wifi (turns out router was unplugged) so she found a contact number for Punta ch'uuy, got Wilberth (who speaks perfect English) on the phone and he gave her great comfort by assuring her that I had arrived safe and sound. ? Getting there: take it slow--lots of potholes on the 6 km drive from Xcalak. Know what you're getting into: minimal electricity (2 bulbs in cabin--1 in bathroom, 1 in bedroom); no outlets work in either cabin, so the only 2 outlets on the property are in the "common bathroom" between cabins, one of which has the router plugged into it (sometimes). Water supply for bathroom comes via a hand-filled tank on the roof (rainwater that's stored in a large ground tank); VERY little pressure from shower or sink--comes out in a trickle; and it may run out of water in the evening, no way to flush toilet (unless you want to sacrifice some drinking water to it) but, when brought to Ramiro's attention, he promptly ran some buckets of water up to refill the holding tank. There will be bugs, gnats or flies (but minimal during my stay). If you leave your door open, expect to find crabs &/or chickens that have come into the room. A pigeon may poop on your pillow (yep--happened ?). You'll want to bring your own drinking water (tho Ramiro, when asked, gave me a 20L jug). Ramiro fishes frequently so you can eat some of the snapper he brings in and fries up and there is also chicken that they will prepare. Primarily, I just ate on the sandwich fixings that I kept in a cooler (there are a few places in town to restock ice, as well as basic needs like beer ?). All told, I had a great & memorable time there and totally recommend if you're willing to sacrifice a great many creature comforts.
