I wanted something special for my wife, Dena, who is celebrating her birthday today. She loves horses and riding. Mario Ortiz’ Rancho Del Sol Dorado 10 minutes from our home in San Miguel de Allende seemed a perfect choice. We invited some friends. One had not ridden before, but knew she could do it. Mario spent extra time with her, getting her comfortable with her horse and giving her some pointers in the riding arena. She loved it. Mario then took us on a two hour ride in the beautiful countryside with glorious views of the valley and surrounding mountains. It was even better than I had hoped. The horses are all very well trained and very well cared for. We returned to the Ranch, had a cool drink and a slice (or two) of surprise Birthday Cake (Mario provided this on his own) in the new Cantina, which features all you would want after a ride, like comfortable leather seating, fans and music. Mario played a fabulous Pavarotti rendition of Nessun Dorma, Dena’s favorite. If you love horses and beauty and being pampered a bit, you cannot do better than Rancho Del Sol Dorado in San Miguel de Allende. It is a slice of heaven.

Visiting this ranch was the highlight of my visit to San Miguel. Holly and Mario were incredibly hospitable, knowledgeable and so so kind. The animals were great and we enjoyed the products that they made on the property. Everyone could benefit from a visit to this ranch because it’s truly a magical place. They should be so proud of what they’ve created and what they can offer their guests. I cannot wait to return to San Miguel and visit Rancho del Sol Dorado again.
