★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Do not leave anything in there or it will be stolen. I was completely alone camped there 02 March, and left a backpack in there with some food in it and that was it because there was a dog wandering around and I was worried he was going to chew through my tent and take my food. I got down from climbing Pico Orizaba about 3:00 p.m. and it was gone. I talked to a nice polish couple that said they were there at 1:00 p.m. and it was there but then they saw three guys show up that looked a little sketchy and they soon Departed with my bag. It's pretty strange that someone would drive all that way on a gnarly dirt road just to hang out at the refudio and see what's there to steal but I guess that's what happens.
Orizaba is definitely a challenge, if you haven't acclimated above 10,000 ft for 3 days, I highly recommend diamox or you won't make it. I wouldn't have made it if I wouldn't have taken some.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The hut is only accessible by 4x4 vehicle and is at almost 14000 feet. It provides basic shelter for the climb of Pico de Orizaba which makes the mountain available for a day-trip (provided you are acclimated).
The bathroom situation is pretty horrible, so be morally ready. No water/electricity/phone service or any other service other than a roof above your head.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Amazing ride on a motorcycle! truly spectacular to be 14,000 ft above the Earth just over the cloud line hahaha if you want an adventure this is the place to come on a motorcycle. Bring plenty of water and a travel buddy. There's even a shelter you can camp in as this is the base camp for the climb to the top of the mountain another 4800 feet higher.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Needs sanitation/bathroom cleanup/construction. Mountain is beautiful but place has tp blowing in the wind because of a lack of a hold in the ground. Hut, trip, and mountain were phenomenal, but sad to see it getting unsanitary because of a lack of leadership to designate/make a spot for the bathroom.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Nice and clean! Great place to stay off season. During main season can get overcrowded.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Needs sanitation and a cleanup of the outhouses in a bad way. Not sure why the national park service doesn't use some of the entry fees for this... It's bad! Pretty area though!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ It's a little unsanitary and everyone is rustling around every night around 11pm - 1am getting ready for their climb

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Great place at 14,000’ to rest and eat before climbing Pico de Orizaba. Deducted one star due to the lack of decent bathroom facilities
