Restaurante Milpa - 77310 Holbox

Food was OK but not mind blowing. Some preparations were to complex and in my opinion, not well executed. In particular, we ordered the meat Tlayuda, a starter, and the meat was incredibly overcooked, dry and not well seasoned. It didn’t feel fresh. Fish was OK but again, normal. Major disappointment: service! I have a food allergy and need to eat gluten free. I asked the waiter several times about a particular dessert and he reassured me every time that it was safe. When the dessert arrived I had my partner try it first because I was positive that there were biscuits in the ice cream. When we rechecked with the waiter, he confirmed that it was not safe. At this point I was very disappointed because I was treated like if I were crazy about rechecking but then again.. in the end I was right. And this was NOT a language issue as I am a native spanish speaker. In the end, he offered to change it and I said no because it didn’t feel safe. My partner eat it. We felt that they shouldn’t have charged us for the dessert but they did. Only after we told them they had it removed. Finally, beware because total bill included a 15% tip but this was not clarified as it was written in a piece of paper. Tips are optional and 5 to 15% is ok. It’s not like in the US. Definitely not coming back or recommending it.

Update: I’ve visited this place every year I come to Holbox and this year it has lost the qualities that made it 5 stars. So I bring it down to 2 stars based on cost vs quality vs experience. In the past you always needed reservations and now it sits empty and you begin to realize once you eat there. It has really changed since last year and there are much better and cheaper options in Holbox... making this place now irrelevant and this is coming from someone who has tried every dish they have. The food and serivce here is top. The best in Holbox and one of the best in Mexico. You will be assisted by a lovely host from Barcelona, Spain... who makes the culinary experience, unforgettable.

Honestly some of the most bland and boring food I’ve ever eaten. It took forever to come as well and there was only one other table. We were excited to try this place as the presentation looked nice in some of the photos we saw. First we were brought a free appetizer. The toast was nice and Smokey but the spread tasted like baby food and the lettuce on top gave it 0 flavor. The entire thing was so tasteless so not a great representation. We ordered the shrimp appetizer which was ok. Still super bland but very nice presentation. The aztec soup had no flavor and barley any broth. The “truffle risotto” that had no truffle was so so hard and plain. The menu makes everything sound great and it’s just so tasteless. Beyond tasteless. The waitress was the best part of the night. She was very kind and wonderful. They also gave us a taste of their tequila. Made with blue agave. Beware, I love mezcal and tequila and this left me feeling spiders were crawling in my mouth and numb. It’s not a cheap place and everything is disappointing.

Exceptional restaurant, best food we had so far in Holbox and Mexico overall. Small menu but delicious selection. We had the Corona de Camarones and the salmon as well as the chocolate desert. The waitress is super friendly, helpful and explains the compositions. We also got a free appetitive and liquor. The food has great flavours and is not like what you get at any other place. The atmosphere in the backyard is also very nice. I can highly recommend going to his place for perfect evening dinner!

We came here for diner and chose the salmon. It was really good, also with a lot of vegetables which we loved because we want to eat healthy. Also we got a good aperitive.

Five course (really six with the complimentary zucchini soup) fixed menu. Local fresh fish, shrimp, one beef, desert. All delicious, unique, and beautiful presentation. Modern takes on local and traditional flavors. A great restaurant.

We decided to try the menus (incl. the vegan). They were really good and very impressive presented. The service also 5⭐️. We really recommend Milpa, if you want to try the Mexican flavors in a really original way. ??

Came here as a returning customer, 4 years after our initial visit. The service is wonderful and attentive, the food is presented in the most creative way we’ve seen on the island and is unique and delicious. Don’t let the empty restaurant fool you when you walk past, everyone is hiding out in the garden at the back (make sure you bring some big spray). We opted for the 5 course seasonal menu and it was all great. I saw a couple of reviews calling the food bland which I think is unfair. Whilst not every course is a “flavour exploration” the creativity is next to none and everything is delicious. Each course somehow tastes comforting. Would highly recommend. You may need to book in advance.
