Since pre-Hispanic times these salt mines have been exploited, salt is the tribute demanded by the dominant peoples, and that from Tejupilco was sent to the great Tenochtitlan. Nowadays they are still exploited and in an artisanal way, the salt that is extracted here is in high demand in the local population, of better quality than the one they sell already industrialized.

If you are into visiting unusual places off the beaten map and wish to learn more about where did the Aztecs get their salt, look no furhter and take a ride to this salt mine that has been in the gig for over 500 years and still operates today making artesanal salt. Given this isn't a tourist attraction per se but private property, there is no place to park so you must be very careful crossing the dangerous highway, especially since the mine is located between several steep curves and cars might miss you. Local staff is very helpful and will feel more than happy to talk about the place. Since tourism is pretty much nonexistent here, nobody really charges you any money. It is highly suggested you visit this place between Janurary-June which is the dry season in order to watch the mine in operation where staff extracts fresh water from the rivers that are rich in minerals and let them dehydrate in tiny pools. If you visit during the rainy season, there will not be anything really worthwhile to see. Make sure you buy a bag of salt in the nearby stores when you leave!
