Salón de Robert - 37750 San Miguel de Allende

The atmosphere Located just outside of centro, this very expensive place is in a garage that has been renovated into a 2-star salon. The owner greets you by unlocking a padlock to let you in. Once inside, he locks up the wrought iron bars again, giving the feeling of being a prisoner in a jail in an unsafe area. The owner Robert is a friendly Texan, personable and very fast. He has been in San Miguel for more than a dozen years and knows the area well. He was accomadating in terms of the time and called back to confirm the appointment within a few hours. He did not state his prices, nor that he was a cash only business. Our experience I took my elderly mom there. She needed her roots coloured and a trim. She usually pays 1,275 pesos in Canada (CDN $100). Robert finished coiffing my mom in one hour. She didn't feel pampered by the experience. My mom didn't look all that different but the roots were done and so felt better about herself. Pricing Robert charged 2,200 pesos (CDN $175). He accepted cash only so I had to go to a bank machine in centro and return to pay him. We thought it a very high price and Robert's explanation was that products are expensive in SMA. This struck us as insincere given how little product he needed for mom's hair, that he works out of his home, and outside of the expensive area, and in Mexico no less. It is also less expensive to go to Andre Pascale as it turns out - a professional salon in Centro. It was our fault for not asking questions of Robert beforehand, and we went on the assumption that going to someone's home in Mexico would cost less than a beauty parlour in Canada. For us, it was disappointing value.
