Aunque ya había sido descubierta su hermosa bahía en 1539, fue hasta 1769 cuando se funda Jose de Gálvez oficialmente la villa y puerto. Y fue hasta la mitad del siglo XIX cuando se inicia la construcción del nuevo templo de San Fernando, y bajo el propio patrocinio y colaboración de la mano de obra de sus pobladores se inició su construcción lentamente hasta casi terminar ese siglo. Las corrientes arquitectónicas neogóticas y neoclásicas dieron el estilo ecléctico que tiene.
