Even though we didn't order any food or drinks at Sanborns, it is undoubtedly worth your visit. Established almost one hundred years ago by two brothers, Walter and Frank Sanborn, California transplants, the place boast one of the most impressive interiors topped with a magnificent glass dome. Sanborns, now owned by Carlos Slim (who seems to own everything else in Mexico, being one of the 16 richest people in the world), has seen the most diverse clientele throughout the years, from Mexican and world luminaries to Zapatista troops who helped themselves to Sanborns' coffee and food; it has also housed Jockey Club. The staircase leading to the second floor boasts a mural by José Clemente Orozco. The outside of the building, the famous House of Tiles (Casa de los Azulejos), features two facades adorned by ceramic tiles, the original on Avenida Francisco I. Madera side, dating from 1737, and the newer addition on the side of Calle 5 de Mayo from 1903.

Sad, sad food. Spam and kraft-slice salad (sold as “cheese”); we got charged 50 pesos instead of 30 (as listed in the menu) for sparkling water because “sparkling water in the menu meant flavoured water, and normal sparkling water is a soda (???) so they charged it as soda”. Scam. I would bet money the wine was mixed with water, it had virtually no flavour. Half the things we ordered weren’t available. Rude staff. A pity.

This restaurant inside the Tiled House is very quaint, and not over priced as one might think. A great selection of different soups, salads, pastas, and mear from the grill. Be sure to check out the mural entering the restrooms. It's elegant and painted by José Clemente Orozco.

Good lunch at Sanborns Madero. I ordered the Enchiladas Suizas. Heavy cheese goodness. Live music and the exquisite interior all elevate the experience further.

Worse restaurant ever! They mixed up the foods, and the food was awful!!!! I wish I could put zero star here. Guacamole was old, probably stayed out for couple hours and it turned black already. Salad on the side went bad. Check the photos I took from food. I don’t recommend this place at all. Save your money and time and your health

Delicious food. Vegetable soup was one of the favorite in my life. Very stylish building. Smells history all over.

Stumbled onto this place by chance. What a fund! Besides being beautiful the drinks and food were excellent. Fruit parfait to start, fettuccine and chicken molé entrees. No room fir dessert but lots of choices downstairs for you to take away. Definitely go, enjoy!
