★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This border crossing is basically a shakedown at the moment. They practically force you to get a taxi to Belize City, for $180 US. Yes, US180! And they just happen to know people that will come and take you. Fly if you can!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ After reading all the opinions I have decided not to go to Belize.
Currently (Sept. 2021) there are no ferries nor buses operating between Chetumal and Belize City. From Chetumal only way is to take the taxi to the border. But later how to get to Belize City it is big unknown. Local people from Chetumal do not have any information.
I have changed my plans to cross the border with Guatemala from San Cristóbal, where they have shuttle services to Antigua and Panajachel.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ They force you to take a Taxi to Belize City for 180 Usd and say you can't cross if you don't take the taxi.
This is the reason why nobody wants to go into this corrupt country when it even starts at the border.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Do not pass through this border control if you don't have your own transportation!!! They make you take a taxi if you want to get to belize city that costs nearly $200, there are currently no busses or other options due to covid. Your best bet is to fly

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Back in 2003 we were a pair of Puerto Rican US citizens doing Anthropology grad school in Mexico City, Belizean authorities here practically held our documents for 3 hours at this custom house clearly expecting to be bribed which we didnt do.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Aside from the mandatory $50usd covid test I found the border crossing to be a pleasant experience. The officials were all courteous and friendly. A taxi to Corozal was secured for $30usd to the ferry terminal, with plenty of time to catch the 3:00pm boat to San Pedro.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Get your wallet out whichever direction you are crossing. 20USD to leave Belize or 633peso to leave Mexico. We've crossed many other boarders between Mexico, Guatemala and Belize and not paid these mad fees. There's also a long long walk between boarders so you'll need a taxi and you cannot walk out the Mexico side so again, taxi (to Chetumal)
