El relato Nican Mopohua narra que la primera vez la virgen le pidió a Juan Diego que se presentase ante el obispo Juan Zumarragas de México, y en la última que le llevase unas flores en su ayate(instrumento agrícola para cosechar) que había cortado en el cerro Tepeyac, de tal manera que deja al descubierto la imagen de la virgen morena y con rasgos mestizos.
