★ ★ ★ ★ ★ La Sociedad de Geografía y Estadística (SMGE) fue la primera asociación científica que se funda en el continente americano (18 de abril de 1833) con el apoyo de José María Valentín Gómez Farías (quien fuera un médico y político mexicano quien fuera Presidente de México por 5 ocasiones), en la época que era necesario conocer la cartografía mexicana, fue la primera en América y la cuarta en el mundo en su especialidad.
Entre las primeras funciones se destacaron:
Las iniciativas para que el gobierno mexicano expida las leyes para determinar los nombres geográficos de las ciudades y otras poblaciones.
Promover la legislación para el cuidado de los bosques y la conservación de monumentos arqueológicos como prioridad nacional.
Realizó un informe sobre el Sistema Métrico Decimal que permitió que México fuese uno de los primeros países en América Latina en adoptar la medida.
Propuso el recorrido del "tendido" de la Red Telegráfica en toda la Nación.
Y generó el "Boletín de la Sociedad de Geografía y Estadística" donde geográfos y exploradores escribieron sus experiencias en la diversidad de paisajes que tiene México.
Los miembros de la institución se han distinguido entre los intelectuales destacados del país, al grado de cuenta con más de cuarenta de ellos se encuentran en la "Rotonda de Hombres Ilustres", ocho de los cuales han sido reconocidos por el Congreso de la Unión, con sus nombres escritos en letras de oro.

The Society of Geography and Statistics (SMGE) was the first scientific association founded in the Americas (April 18, 1833) with the support of José María Valentín Gómez Farías (who was a Mexican doctor and politician who was President of Mexico for 5 occasions), at the time that it was necessary to know the Mexican cartography, it was the first in America and the fourth in the world in its specialty.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ En esta antigua casona marcada con el número 19 de la calle Justo Sierra, se aloja la Sociedad Mexicana de Geografía y Estadística, fundada en 1833 por órdenes del presidente Valentín Gómez Farías.
A lo largo de 186 años esta institución ha reunido un valioso acervo sobre investigaciones realizadas en México, que van desde la estadística hasta la antropología, pasando por la historia y las mediciones barométricas, además de una mapoteca con 8,300 ejemplares de diferentes partes de México y otros países.
Aquí se practicó el primer mapa de México.
Tanta variedad despierta la curiosidad por saber cuáles serían algunas de las joyas que ahí resguardan.
In this old house marked with the number 19 Justo Sierra Street, the Mexican Society of Geography and Statistics is housed, founded in 1833 by orders of President Valentín Gómez Farías.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Si encontrarme con un amigo y fue muy agradable ver que había un evento sobre robótica. El edificio es hermoso Aunque parezca que se está cayendo y tiene una cafetería interesante. Vale la pena visitarlo sólo por su arquitectura del siglo XVIII.

Un tanto desairada por los personajes que forman está Sociedad ya que no se presentaron a tiempo. Lástima de su prestigio y aplausos al autor.
