★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The dorm and premises were clean. Staff very helpful, decent English. Very conveniently located and very reasonable rates. The best value and price on this trip, I stayed 5 days.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Solid hostel for a great price. There are only two problems, lack of lockers, which is partly mitigated by it being safe, and poor wi-fi access in upstairs rooms, though in the lobby it works great.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Owner and manager are super friendly and kind. But the bed is way too wobbly and the upper bed is super hot. The dormitory is next to the busy street so it is very loud. It is hard to sleep.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This is one of the best hostels I have ever stayed in! The staff is what really made it amazing. I still keep in contact with them and hope to return ASAP to spend more nights there and explore Merida.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Really friendly owner, clean dorm rooms, nice pool and free breakfast!! Only has a couple of floor fans in each room which can be uncomfortable in the heat but het place is an easy walk from ADO bus station and the main square.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I stayed here for several days in 2012 on a backpacking trip starting in Mexico City and eventually taking me all around the Yucatan Peninsula. This was my absolute favourite hostel of the entire trip! In Merida, they certainly offer the best value among competitors.
The Hostel itself seems a little bit hidden and run down from the outside, but once you pass through the gateways you find a rather sizable and beautiful home away from home with major character. I stayed in the dorms, although private rooms are available. Laundry is available daily and there is a delicious breakfast served each morning including fresh bananas grown right on site!
I can not stress more how amazing the staff are. They are the sweetest, kindest, and most sincere hosts I have had at any lodging, anywhere on my travels. They were proficient in English, however we exchanged as much Spanish as possible, and I learned something new every day. That's not to mention the feline staff, who will always be keeping an eye on you from the nearest girder.(Oh, Doris!! ♥♥)
No doubt, if you are staying in Merida for any length of time, Hostel Casa Nico is where you want to do it.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Given the large number of hostels of a similar price in the neighbourhood, there is no reason to stay here for the following reasons: 1) The owner is unnecessarily rude and disrespectful. He greeted us with a snarky remark, gave us instructions on how we should behave, and lectured us for no reason. One of the instances was that we left at 4am and since there was no one at the front desk, we dropped our bags off and left a nice note saying thanks with the key. When we returned, he asked us if we knew where our bags were, LAUGHED AT US when we said no, then didn't tell us until we apologized for not informing him of our departure in advance. Clearly didn't understand customer service. 2) The hostel is infested with mosquitoes (and cockroaches but that's a different story), which is interesting because there's no mosquitoes elsewhere in the city. 3) The only place with WiFi was outside, where the mosquitoes are... 4) The rooms are very hot and there's no real way to cool them down. 5) Breakfast was mediocre. 6) At night, they blasted loud electronic music for like 3 guests, which can be heard in all rooms. One of the worst hostel experiences I've ever had- especially because the owner was extremely unkind. We switched to a much nicer hostel after our unpleasant stay for the same price (Hostel Catedral) because of him.
