★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I honestly just can't say enough good things about this place. I did the cooking class and it was wonderful. The food was great, we got to make things from scratch - including grinding the corn! - and it was both so much fun and so entertaining. Really good value too. I loved Laura's stories, and I loved that she's the kind of person who makes everyone feel comfortable and able to open up.
Also, these are the best tamales I've ever had! Really different (read: much better) than the ones you can buy.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Tried making tamale! It was such a fun and was just 200mxn including special indigenous drinks. Run by NGO and their income is used to help indigenous kids. Cooking dinner is 200mxn but lunch would be 109mxn making tortillas.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ My girlfriend and I had a wonderful culinary and cultural experience on a Steps cookery workshop, where we learnt how to make tacos from scratch. It was so much fun and a worthy cause, we'd highly recommend it to anyone with similar interests!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I stopped by today for a story telling session and loved it. I learned about the Mayan culture and how it’s evolved over time to present day Mexico. You can tell how hard the organization is trying to keep the traditional Mayan history of the communities they work with alive. Thank you for sharing their stories!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This was an excellent way to spend an evening with friends. Our host Rocío, and her interpreter Leo made the whole experience extremely enjoyable! Almost as soon as we arrived we were put to work doing the prep work for our meal. The whole time we put together the ingredients for tamales, salsa, and ponche our hosts were giving us detailed description of the items we were using--as well as their importance to the local indigenous peoples. After assembly was complete, we sat around the table while our dinner was cooking, and Rocío told us stories about the origin of the tamale (very interesting stuff!). Of course being able to eat your creation at the end of the evening is a fantastic way to wrap things up. This is a hidden gem of an attraction and well worth the 250 pesos the organization asks for materials...making it easy to justify a healthy tip for the entertaining evening!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ An amazing evening spent here, learning how to cook tamales and the history of mayan cuisine. It's super interesting and it's a must do while in San Cristobal. This is an association that helps the indigenous communities and teach outsiders so many things about said communities. I wholeheartedly recommend going there.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We did both cooking classes morning and evening. Rocio was an amazing storyteller and teacher.
In the evening we made tamales with mumu and cheese, salsa roja and ponche. Along with the stories some pox too!
In the morning we made tortillas, pozol and tascalate.
This nonprofit will use the money you pay for this experience to bring programs to native children like storytelling, making masks or painting.
Their most important goal is to empower the kids and regain confidence while remembering who they are and how rich their culture is.
I loved STEPS in San Cristobal. This is a must while you are here!
