Gracias, gracias, gracias!
I went to the Huella Carmín Workshop with my mom. I have been in Mexico for about a year, and this experience was one of the best I have ever had. This family cares a lot about the environment, its art and its roots, and everything is reflected in their works. They spent hours showing and explaining to us about the process. My mom and I are in love with this family and this experience. Thank you thank you thank you!

Both the workshop and the accommodation of the Huella Carmín family are excellent, Rey David and his wife Patricia treated us incredible. We loved the experience of seeing and practicing the entire manufacturing process of the rugs, and the explanation had all the detail and love. The room is a luxury, spacious, beautiful and full of details. The fabrics are beautiful, we liked them so much that we took 5 to Spain!

A place where you feel at home. The treatment is very humane, you learn to make culinary dishes of Zapotec origin. David and his family also teach you the entire wool weaving process. I highly recommend it. ?

In October 2021 Didi and I spent two weeks in Rey David's cute little apartment he's built above their compound. They're a family of five Zapotec- and Spanish-speaking residents of Teotitlan. They're wonderful. They're charming. They love visitors. If you speak Spanish you will fall in love with them. Jacobo and Mireya, and their grown very young adults Rey David, Julitsa, and Eric. Patricia has joined the family by marrying Rey. They're inspiring to watch, in their interactions with each other. They're weavers. You'll see five big old Spanish wooden looms. They weave their own gorgeous woolen products plus they run a network of other weavers in the town. You won't be able to resist spending some dough on their products--mainly rugs and tapestries. We spent 1200 bucks. Twenty-four-year-old Rey David is the most entrepreneurial of the five and runs the Airbnb operation. The town of Teotitlan is an Indian village, really, of 6,000 or so. It was founded by an advance party of Aztec warriors just before the Spaniards invaded Mexico. I speak perfect Spanish so I learned that Teotitlan is run on the traditional "usos y costumbres" system. Assemblies of up to 800 people decide who the mayor and other officials will be. All officials can be recalled by acclamation in an assembly. There is no crime in the village. Doors are unlocked. There are no destitute people to be seen. They have committees that do all the work including garbage collection and policing. The police are unarmed and all volunteers. All are unpaid volunteers including the mayor. Like all Mexican towns however, many of the men have spent years working in the U.S., mainly in Southern California. This family though has not sent anybody to work abroad. The apartment we stayed in and another extra one they have and the whole compound have a beautiful view of the valley. The sunsets are lovely. And you can hike up the Picacho mountain peak, which we did, not an easy hike, but you'll have a wonderful view of the town and the forests and the valley way way down below.
