A	Agronegocios Sustentables Sophie on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Se trata de uno de los conventos más antiguos de la región, fundado por fray Jerónimo de San Esteban y Juan Cruzate hacia 1557 (Fig. 1). Nueve años después, fue elevado a la categoría de doctrina, y para 1571, San Agustín Jonacatepec tenía bajo su jurisdicción nueve visitas: Amacuitlapilco, Chalcatzingo, Tetela, Teliuztaca, Atlacahualoyan, Axochiapan, Atotonilco, Tepalzingo y Temoac. El convento de Jonacatepec se mantuvo como tal hasta mediados del siglo XIX, época en que dejó de funcionar, "pues en un informe de 1874 se afirmó que una parte servía de escuela para niños, otra de cuartel para la fuerza de seguridad pública, y algunas de las habitaciones de la parte alta eran ocupadas por el cura del lugar. El atrio se utilizó como cementerio, mercado, teatro, tierra de cultivo, campo experimental agrícola y de fútbol, entre otros usos". De la época de la Revolución mexicana datan las horadaciones que presentan las fachadas sur y poniente del templo, así como parte del campanario, probablemente a consecuencia de impactos de proyectiles. El atrio del convento es de grandes dimensiones, lo que nos indica que la población indígena sujeta a la cabecera de San Agustín Jonacatepec durante el periodo colonial era considerable. En este lugar, año con año se celebra la tradicional Feria de la Cebolla. Adosadas a la iglesia del convento se encuentran varias tumbas neoclásicas, que hacia el siglo XIX debieron ser verdaderamente espléndidas. Entre ellas destacan tres monumentos de personas que en vida fueron masones: se pueden identificar por los característicos símbolos relacionados con esta sociedad secreta, que por lo visto no estaba peleada con la iglesia. Dos de ellas se localizan cerca de la entrada lateral de la iglesia; hoy han perdido su antigua magnificencia pero nos permiten apreciar parte de su sistema constructivo a base de ladrillos. Desgraciadamente están ausentes las lápidas con los nombres de la familia o los difuntos que las ocupan, lo cual nos sería de utilidad actualmente para indagar más sobre los pobladores del lugar. Las tumbas son sobrias y presentan una columna, aunque con variantes entre una y otra.
