A beautiful temple and surrounding. In the middle of lots of small shops and restaurants, this is a great place to explore and get lost in the Oaxacan culture. We went during the Dia De Los Muertos celebration 2019. It was our location to enjoy the music, food and culture.

This cathedral is stunning. If you are a fan of baroque style architecture than you will be thrilled, if you are not than I’m sorry. There are more than 60,000 pieces of 23.4 karat gold sheets used in the space. We were fortunate to see a new piece being covered. So interesting, at one point the cathedral was taking over by the military & they used the space for storage both animal & gun storage. When they left they stole everything from the walls. Slowly the cathedral has rebuilt. You can see in the photos one of the new pieces being completed. True artisans at work. So much history!! Don’t miss out on the museum.

What a beautiful building ? Barroque style. Construction began in 1521! It is covered in gold and amazing workmanship in every inch of the interior of the building. Everything is made with incredible detail a photo doesn't do it justice. You got to SEE it! You can smell the wood inside and as with many churches it has a nice, peaceful and welcoming feel. Outside the building gets showered with sunlight which makes it look warm and glowy. It has an interesting garden at the front. On the side there's a small shop where you can buy church souvenirs such as earrings, necklaces in silver of high quality at a good price. Did not attend a service but I'm sure it would be awesome... And I'm not even a catholic! It is such an honor to be able to visit a building with so much history and spirituality. Catholic church negative criticism must be put aside and go in with an open mind ?

The most extravagantly beautiful church in Oaxaca and the most Iconic. Its free to enter except for one thing, its closed most of the time and the times posted on the door are, lets just say, not adhered to with swiss precision. More like, island time. So basically you have to camp out in the plaza and wait and hope that today is the day when they'll decide to open the place within half an hour of the posted time. Is it worth it? yes!!!

Beautiful on the outside, cold and heartless on the inside. This has to be the most spectacular church in Oaxaca. But whether you are a practicing Catholic, a parishioner of another faith, or heaven forbid someone who would like to appreciate the beautiful interior, hit the road jack. Even when services let out and you step into this temple of Holiness, you will be met by self-appointed guardians who will give you the bum's rush back onto the Oaxacan cobblestones. We ended up attending mass at the main Cathedral. Much friendlier and Christ-like there.

Amazing place to take photos. I was only there for a brief time and it was closed so I did not get a chance to go inside. But at night it became a fantastic place to take pictures especially during the city's day of the dead ceremony which happens each year. Be warned it can get crowded

There is a jarring amount of detail in this church. It boggles the mind to think about how many lifetimes it must have taken the master sculptors, masons, and painters it took to create something so beautiful. Did they ever get to see the completed works in their lifetime? It is a testament to what the human spirit can achieve when given a divine purpose.

An iconic part of Oaxaca. So much history, food, life and culture surrounds this church. If you come to Oaxaca you must visit. Also be sure to check out the garden behind the church. A very nice place to sit and be still. And on hot days it stays nice and cool as well.
