★ ★ ★ ★ ★ SMALL BUT EXQUISITE
Of the dozens of choices one has when arriving into Cozumel, The Mayan Cacao Company rates as one of the most remarkable and positively memorable choices a visitor is likely to discover.
A ten-minute cab ride from the port has one expecting to find a typically commercial if not ‘fake’ factory tour with an overpriced gift shop. Not to be confused with its water-park neighbor (an unneeded destination), The Mayan Cacao Company is a treasure - small but on par with a world-class museum in its own way.
We had the benefit of a private tour by the impeccably-English-speaking guide, Martin. Mexico could not have a better ambassador. His 45-minute walking tour – through murals, through galleries, through horticulture, through huts, through workshops, and through hand-made tasting samples – is more than about chocolate. It is to learn about Mexico itself, from the nature-inspired wisdom of the exterminated Maya tribe to the profound and proud beliefs today of Mexico’s 100+ million people.
That such a great learning experience ends with the chance to buy vast varieties of chocolate itself is another crazily good bonus too! : )

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Cozumel?? Fun to see how chocolate is made from cacao seeds ground by hand the add spices and honey. Tastings of the different chocolates were excellent. Don’t miss this cultural attraction. Also enjoy the tequila tasting section.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We just did a tour and tasting with Carlos and he was extremely knowledgeable and made us some fantastic chocolate right in front of us to taste. It was an amazing experience and he shared with us so much wonderful history that we walked away wanting to learn more about Mexican history and culture. Ask for Carlos!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Wonderful tour, I am so glad we made this one of our stops on our short vacation in Cozumel. Angel is very knowledgable and answered all of our questions about cacao. We were very lucky to have been there on a quiet morning. Eating freshly ground cacao from the metate was muy sabroso! The bars they have for sale in the shop are exquisite!
