★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We moved here from the Main House and let me save you the time: You want to be at the Beach House. Trust me. It is much more relaxing, the right amount of party vibes and altogether the better location. The design is gorgeous. We had a soak tub, marble walk-in shower and a spacious balcony with partial sea views. At night you can hear the waves and to wake up to the sound of them crashing is worth a million dollars. We both had to work during our stay so we appreciated the more quiet location and the excellent wifi connection.
The food is wonderful. We ate our breakfasts here and ordered lunch from C Grill once. The American Breakfast included with our booking was huge, varied and always delicious. In the reviews for the Main House, people complain often about not having access to the day club at the pool. Here, we had access to chairs or cabanas whenever we liked and there was no pressure to keep spending money to stay there. In fact, we often had to chase down staff to be able to sign our tab. There was a lot of trust.
That's where this establishment really shines: staff. Everyone was so helpful and went above and beyond. From reception staff, to housekeeping, Emiliano at the restaurant and Diana who teaches the morning yoga classes (I had private lessons for my whole stay because no one else showed up). Betty is an excellent manager. And more! Every person we interacted with was a gem. We witnessed interactions with some loathsome, entitled guests and the staff always remained professional and courteous-- much more than I would have!
I want to make a final comment on "Dog Friendliness." We traveled with our little guy as we always do and this is the first luxury accommodation we stay at that I can say was truly "dog friendly" and not just "dog tolerant." Giacomo was welcome everywhere. He sat at breakfast with us, he could be on a beach chair, he could walk down the hallways and be in the common areas. I really appreciate this because most places will charge us for the dog but not give him access to any hotel amenities and apply strict rules that complicate our stay.
The only constructive criticism we noticed from the moment we entered the room: coffee is part of the mini bar and you will be charged $4 (CAD) for every Nespresso pod you brew. At this price point, not having access to free coffee and tea in the room is a little shocking. We opted to always have our coffee at breakfast but normally we like to wake up in our room and have a cup. Ironically, we were charged for 2 pods we never used at checkout, but the staff promptly reversed those charges.
We were dreaming about coming back before we even left. Don't hesitate on booking this one!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We didn't stay here but we played on the beach for a bit and ate at the grill. The food and service were both top-notch. It looks like a really fun place to stay right on the beach. They had a lot of different lounge areas and a pool.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Really enjoyed staying here. PDC was a lot more touristy than we imagined but this hotel was a peaceful and chic enclave in the middle of all the craziness.
We had the beachfront suite which I would highly recommend. Wraparound balcony was amazing and you could literally hear the waves inside the room. Room was spacious and clean. There's a plunge pool (not hot tub as I had mistakenly thought) on the balcony which we wanted to use but was a little too chilly. Big TV in room that allows streaming/casting. The only recommendation I would have is to give more pillows on the bed to make it more plush and comfortable.
Hotel service I would say is pretty hands off, however if you need anything they're more than willing to help. The hotel does offer a few excursions etc which they're helpful with arranging. They also offered free covid tests for flying back to the US. When staying at the Beach House you also have access to all the amenities (pool and restaurant) at the main house a few blocks away which we enjoyed. We rented bikes one morning from the main house which was fun. It should be noted that the common areas in the hotel are VERY small and there aren't a lot of places to relax outside of your room, the pool, and the beach.
Food and beverage on site was solid (not out of this world amazing but solid) and pricing is similar to US prices. I drank my share of spicy margaritas. I loved the beach beds which were on the property but still felt like you were right on the beach with sand under your toes. No need to reserve the beach/pool beds & cabanas in advance which was nice. Beach itself is on the smaller side but clean and well-kept as of Jan 2022. Seaweed was removed early each morning.
Location is good. It's right next to the main street if you're looking for bars/clubs, shopping and big restaurants. I'd recommend riding bikes or walking up to Calle 38 if you're looking for a more laid back side of Playa. Madrez Cafe (literally across the street from the hotel) was great for a cheap and tasty breakfast.
Lastly - if you are super sensitive to noise at night I would just note that you can definitely hear a lot of music from neighboring hotels. Playa del Carmen in general is a pretty loud & lively place. It didn't bother me too much but I'd recommend looking elsewhere if it bugs you and you're looking for peace and quiet.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We had access to this as guests at the Thompson, but I felt un welcome and racially profiled on Friday when I was asked repeatedly by different staff if I were staying at Thompson. When I walked in with another couple who was white but never was asked, just served. I spoke to guest service agents who gave me a generic apology and told me that a manager would Call me . This manager never reached out so my assumption is that no one cares and this behavior is acceptable. My husband and I immediately left the beach and never returned to that place. Very disappointing!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We booked an ocean view room which we were not given and then they said told us if we wanted that room which we paid for already and had confirmation then I would need to pay for the upgrade . The music all night kept us up . I would never stay here again !
