It's an incredible hotel that offers incredible beach side dining with sunset views. Service and staff are top notch.

Outstanding Beach resort. The grounds were impeccably clean at all times. The restaurants had swift and responsive service. The views were incredible. I was upgraded to a room with a plunge pool which was incredibly fantastic.

We happened to wander by on January 29 and observed some dinner preparations being made. We inquired and learned there was a special event featuring a prix fixe paella dinner, there were tables available, so we joined in. We enjoyed the event very much, the food was very good, the service by "Lot" was excellent, and the price of $1145 MNX ($60.00 US), obviously high by Mexican standards, was fair considering it included 3 courses, dessert, and a bottle of excellent espumoso. We were advised there was another special event, Humo, planned for the following week, so we made reservations. Upon arrival we inquired and learned Lot was not working that evening. We ordered a Negroni and asked for time to just relax and enjoy the sunset. Another waiter approached us and we reiterated our request. Before we were halfway through the cocktail we were approached again, the waiter was difficult to understand but we got the drift that the chef was offering a little something special so we said yes thinking it was like an appetizer. Within minutes our entire Humo dinner plank arrived AND an entire snapper wrapped in banana leaves was placed on the table as well. The waiter fought the wrapped fish, finally getting it partially open, then proceeded to serve us little crumbled pieces of fish with burnt skin. He obviously did not know how to take it apart or remove the spine. During this almost laughable display our featured Humo smoked dinner plank is getting cold. We asked for it to be returned and replaced later, and ate little bits of the fish that the waiter managed to pick off of the top half. When dinner was returned it had obviously just been held for us and was barely warm. We asked for a fresh plank but got the same one back, now getting dried out and barely warm. The plank held some smoked beef, ribs, and chicken in fairly small portions, and presented so that you had to try to cut them into serving portions on a crowded plank, with a dull knife. The offerings were mediocre, so by this time we just wanted to eat what we could manage and leave. Fortunately the Sangiovese was very good and kept our unhappiness in check. The check arrived, $5,158 MNX! Two dinners @$1750 that we expected (and from our previous experience thought would be worth it), $758 for the wine and Negroni's, and $900 for the fish! We were hard pressed to not leave a minimal tip so resulted in almost $5,900 MNX, $286.00 US! The worst dinner experience, which rarely exceeded $1000MNX, in our entire three week stay. Ignore the star ratings as we were not guests of the resort.

We stayed 3 nights with our little 20 month old daughter and we had an amazing stay! The staff is fantastic, courteous and very helpful. We felt safe in this warm and welcoming place. We had numerous occasions when we felt the staff went over and beyond, especially when it came to the attention for our little girl. The location itself is a splendid boutique hotel recently remodeled. The room are spacious, quite, well furnished and comfortable. The location is unbeatable! The hotel has an unparalleled access to Playa de la Ropa and is only 5 min only from downtown where you can enjoy plenty of local restaurants. We also visited during the winter holidays and enjoyed walking at night in the old down where Xmas lights made the city even more vibrant. We have recommended this hotel to friends and family and we’ll Vérone back soon!

We stayed at the Thompson for 7 days to celebrate our anniversary and feel like the place is not worth the money. The room - Our room was a beach suite which is a nice room with a plunge pool and a nice deck. Highlight of the trip was how nice the room was. However-The plunge pool was the same temperature as an ice bath so honestly would not say the upgrade for the pool is worth it since we didn’t use it. The hotel - the grounds are beautiful and there are two nice pools to hang out in. The beach set up is great and there are plenty of places to select to lounge in. However, we are constantly being asked what our room number is. Even when we were not requesting service. We would just be waking around, or sitting on a bench and a staff member would come up and asks us what room we are. I understand trying to make sure that guests are safe but if this is such a concern maybe providing a wrist band or something to indicate that you are a guest could help prevent the constant questioning of if you “belong”. It’s a bit off putting when you’re just trying to relax and then you have people constantly question if you should be there. Additionally, we were put off at how the website lists a bunch of “perks” for which they charge an extra 10% per night. Several of these amenities I believe should not require an additional cost (wifi is not an amenity and local and domestic phone calls seems weird to include) but the below were also listed as reasons for the 10% charge for which I have issues with. - Chef’s flavored water of the day and iced-cold popsicles served pool side. Aside from the glass of flavored water that you receive when you check in I didn’t see this at all. They definitely did not have popsicles served pool side. - Tennis Facilities. They have a “complimentary” tennis court but you have to pay if you didn’t bring your own rackets. (Which who would???) - Group Tennis classes (2 per week) I never saw this offered. In their FAQ section of the website they have the below listed- Do I need to bring towels and sunscreen with me for beach and pool time? Not at all — we’ve got you covered with everything from towels and sunscreen to lounge chairs and palapas, food, drinks and even complimentary locally inspired treats throughout the day. They do not actually have you covered. When we asked about sunscreen they kindly walked us to the boutique and wanted to charge us 70 USD for it (If you need sun screen I suggest you walk around to the alley way behind Hao and buy some from local folks for around 25 USD). Again, never saw any complementary locally inspired anything. The hotel does not really provide anything complementary despite their claims otherwise (you do actually get 2 complementary water bottles per day, though). Overall the hotel felt like they were trying to imitate a luxury experience while nickel and dimming for everything. For the amount of money that the rooms cost it is not unreasonable to expect a few perks to be provided or at least to have the perks that are listed on the website provided. If this is not what is actually going to be done then maybe take it off?? Lastly, our room was on the beach and happened to be next to the area where they have weddings. The hotel did not once give us a heads up that there was a wedding going on that would last until 1 a.m but the speakers being right by our room meant that our room was vibrating and literally felt like the speakers were inside of our room. I know that the wedding takes priority but the hotel giving us a heads up and providing us with ear plugs or a free breakfast would have gone a long way for us not being able to fall asleep until the wedding ended at 1 a.m. Food- I mostly did not eat here as the prices were absurd and you could get amazing food at a much lower cost in a short beach walk to La Perla for dinner or take a taxi to Carmelita’s for breakfast. Both places were amazing and way more reasonably priced.

Amazing stay at the Thompson Zihua! The hotel is located in calm, tranquil, Playa la Ropa, where families and vacationers alike enjoy the smaller waves of the bay, perfect for lounging or swimming. All of the staff were friendly and talkative, eager to provide hospitality for your stay. The grounds are neatly kept, and the beach chairs occupy the best real estate on the beach. We had a huge bedroom with its own plunge pool facing the lagoon. The gym even had a peleton for you to keep up with workouts. But really, the best place to spend the day is on the lounge chairs facing the beach. I was sad to leave!

Best stay ever! So worth the money. Excellent facilities! Wonderful staff. Feel welcomed immediately upon arrival. Modern, cool and by the beach. Excellent WiFi. Superb Spa! I cannot say enough good things about our stay here. They are pet friendly. We stayed in a swim-up suite overlooking the ocean. It was the most memorable 5 day stay; they even saw us off at 4 am with croissants and coffee for the road! Benchmark resort! Thank you.
