About Vallarta Tequila Tastings

Mexico’s booming tequila industry is growing fast. In Jalisco, you can have the fascinating experience of visiting a craft distillery for a taste of what made the drink so wildly popular in the first place.

So much more than a boozy getaway, the town of Tequila and its environs were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006 due to the ancient production facilities and immense agave landscape. The region has been producing distilled agave spirits since the 16th century and fermented agave drinks, such as pulque, that date back at least 2,000 years.

Not surprisingly, agave beverages have very much become a part of Mexico’s national identity and you’ll find no better place to soak all that up than in the tequila capital of the world.

From plant to aromatic drink

One of the best ways to delve deep into tequila’s storied history, culture and production process is with a four-hour tour (MXN$1,300 per person) on the sprawling property of Tequila Fortaleza, which includes a guided distillery visit, a tasting session and lunch in a sublime blue agave garden.

Fortaleza produces one of the best tequilas on the planet, and though the brand is only 15 years old, the family has been immersed in the craft of tequila-making for five generations. Fortaleza remains a relatively small operation that focuses on what Fortaleza co-founder Guillermo Erickson Sauza describes as “a very clean, smooth tequila with no coloring and no additives.”

The tour offers an up-close look at what goes into producing tequila using traditional methods, such as elaborate handcrafted bottles and corks and implementing a tahona (stone wheel) mill for crushing the cooked agave. It’s that notably unhurried approach that makes all the difference.

“My grandfather had to close down the distillery because it was so inefficient, but we decided that this old inefficiency creates great taste,” Erickson Sauza says.

Fortaleza produces delectable blanco (white), reposado (aged for six months) and añejo (aged for at least 18 months) tequilas, and it now puts out a higher proof still-strength drink.

Great experience, I am not a fan of Tequila and they really took the time to explain things to me during the Spirit of Mexico tasting in a way that we could understand. They followed all covid protocols and brought everything to our location. Great job, will definitely do it next time we are in town.

Had a great tasting experience with 3 others. Tried 6 different tequila/mezcal and all were great unique finds. Momo was a wealth of knowledge and we learned a lot. This is at the owners home in her back patio which has a great view of the marina and the sunset.vwould recommend.

Booked the Tequila & Food Tasting and it was a great experience that I absolutely recommend. Alice and Corinna were wonderful hosts. Alice taught us so much about the history and process of making tequila which is actually quite interesting! We 100% walked away with an appreciation for tequila that we never had. The meal paired fantastically with the tequila and Alice was very knowledgeable about the dishes as well. We visited mid-November and felt totally comfortable with the COVID precautions Alice and Corinna took to keep both us and them safe. The staff at Vallarta Tequila Tastings responded quickly to questions, were friendly, and very accommodating and helpful when our grumpy two year old smacked a glass over (??‍♀️). Our time and money was well spent with these ladies. No hesitation in recommending an tequila tasting experience with Vallarta Tequila Tasting.

Absolutely loved this tasting! If you're ever in Vallarta, don't get tricked by the lame tastings in the touristy area with cheap tequila. Go here instead! My husband and I loved it. Very good tequila, very down to earth service. Both Corrine and Alise were very friendly, fun and knowledgeable. We enjoyed sipping the delicious varieties of tequila as well as finding out what to pair them with. And learning about tequila was fun! Definitely makes you appreciate the art of tequila making. If we're ever in Puerto Vallarta again, I would definitely want to do this again!

Absolutely spectacular experience. Our tasting expert (after 6 spirits I forgot her name, I'm so sorry!!!) was amazing. She clearly has a passion for tequila and mezcal and was such a knowledgeable, gracious hostess. We learned about the history of tequila, the difference between tequila and mezcal, and obviously got to taste an amazing variety of spirits. Do yourself a favor and book this tasting - it's a cultural enrichment opportunity and you'll be a better person for it.

Roxy is phenomenal. You need a tequila tasting with this tequila because it will delight you. They’re so inclusive (lgbt friendly and women owned). The space is beautiful and you see real blue agave plants. Karina looks amazing in leopard print. It’s centrally located.

Edgar was amazing! He was very knowledgeable and relayed the information in a manner in which the group could relate too. In addition, the tasting was very intimate and welcoming. The tequila was amazing and learning the proper way of drinking tequila was something special. I definitely recommend this tour and will be going back!
