★ ★ ★ ★ ★ To be honest, the first impression was a blast. When you get there it definitely looks very nice and unique. But if you take a look under the hood, nothing is as it seems.
Infrastructure:
First of all, the WIFI didn‘t work at all. Sending messages on What’s App takes hours. We weren’t even able to book bus tickets, because it’s so bad, that the website runs into timeouts - we tried over an hour until we gave up. The beds are so uncomfortable you could either way sleep on the floor. The mattress is from the 1950s. The room (we stayed in Bungalow 3) is completely dirty. If you look on the construction above the bed you will find dust and a lot of dead animals. On the roof of the bed - believe it or not - was even a dead gecko. On the first day we found a fat cockroach on the toilet. I had to kill it because my girlfriend was scared. The dead cockroach wasn’t removed by the cleaning staff until the end of our stay. On our first evening we experienced an electricity blackout for around 50 minutes. When we went to bed afterwards, it was a windy evening which resulted in a sleepless night due to the scratching palm leaves on the roof of the cabana. It gets that loud, that even my noice canceling headphones didn’t help. Moreover we had no warm water on our last day for about seven hours.
The mosquito net over the bed doesn’t help because there are mosquitoes everywhere. Not even the mosquito repellent spray helped.
Food:
The breakfast is completely insufficient and does not meet a four star hotel standard at all. You get the same dishes every day. The bread is old, the coffee is not drinkable, you won’t get milk, you don’t get small spoons and it takes very long until you get served, due to the fact that there are only two waiters for the entire resort. On the second day of our stay we chose to get a snack at the restaurant (a club sandwich and a cesar salad) which caused into food poisoning for both of us. My girlfriend was hanging over the toiled vomiting half an hour after we had the snack and the food poisoning destroyed one complete day of our stay.
Beach:
First of all it was not possible to get beach towels on all three days of our stay when we asked for them. Even though the beach is beautiful an clean, the sunbeds are extremely old and placed randomly somewhere at the beach. There is also a little garden next to the front pool which looks ragged. The pool is completely full of sand - it seems as if it doesn‘t get cleaned on a daily base.
Isla Holbox was the last destination of our Yucatan roundtrip. We stayed in many hotels during our trip which were all awesome except for this one.
If you don’t want to ruin your holiday don’t stay at the Xcaloc Resort. It is not worth the four stars at all and it seems ironic that they call themselves „resort“.
Nevertheless the Island is beautiful and worth a stay.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This place was great: 2 pools, one mostly for families and another for adults. Rooms were clean and well taken care of. The palapa roofs tend to leave a bit of a mess but nothing too big. All the rooms open up to the pool and have hammocks out front. Breakfast is included and if you have to check out early in the morning and miss breakfast they will pack a lunch for you to-go. I'd stay here again.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A really good find for the money but don't expect high-end amenities. You must ask for basic things like beach towels and soap refills. the wifi is deplorable. Do not expect to be able to get online or send SMS or MMS messages. The Continental Breakfast leaves much to be desired. The mosquito netting was inadequate, not covering the entirety of the bed area. The bedding and cups/plates were not changed/replaced daily. Silver lining is it's proximity to the beach and it's cheap nightly rate.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Yesterday's arrival (7.3. 2021) was bad from the beginning. From the outside, the hotel looks abandoned for ten years, no one anywhere, dry fallen palm leaves and branches everywhere, newcomers don't even know where to go. Room (bungalow) ready but without towels, staff said they will bring them to us in ten minutes. In 10 minutes it was another 10 minutes, which eventually lasted an hour and towels were nowhere to be seen. We decided to at least go swimming on the beach and pick up towels along the way, fortunately we met one of the employees and gave us at least towels for the beach. Upon our return, we hoped that the promised towels would be in the room, of course nothing anywhere, and even after two hours of walking around the hotel, there was no one from the staff to turn to. The water only flows cold and it is not pleasant. We were looking forward to the peace and quiet among the palm trees, according to the photos the bungalows looked cozy but we got the first room from the reception where (from the kitchen) comes an unpleasant hum, so the expected peace and quiet is really not there. Wifi is pretty bad, maybe it's affected by the weather, which now is, but if not, it's the worst wifi in the whole time we've been in Yucatan. As for the beach, it's misery. I know that was the storm and the sea were washed the algae along the entire length of the island, but that someone would tidy the 8 meters private beache, not. After all, what do you want to do if any employee is there. And complete tragedy eventually, BREAKFAST. We hoped, breakfast will improve everything, but it was the worst experience in Mexico. Make two people get a glass juice, a cup of coffee, three slices of watermelon (1 cm slice), 2 teaspoons of marmalade, 1 teaspoon of butter, 6 sliced pieces of baguits and 4 eggs (2 eggs for each). Nothing else is to choice and asking about adding is an answer that it's extra serving and must pay (I didn't even ask how much). This 4* hotel is like barely 2* hotel. Hotel, where ONE night cost 100 USD I expected much better service!!! I definitely do not recommend!!!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Visited in fall 2019. The room was more than adequate for spending a night solo on the island to see the bioluminescence at Playa Punta Cocos. The WiFi worked.
No free bikes; I had to rent one from Casa Maya nearby.
What was really annoying about the service was that reception demanded my passport in original. I do NOT travel with my passport on some remote island. I had a scanned copy on my phone, but that wasn't OK with them.
