★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The best! Absolute and total best. Named Xotolar (plural for wild sunflowers) for the wild sunflowers, this stunning ranch has been in the same family for 3 generations. You cannot get better service. We live in San Francisco,CA and our children have always lived in big cities with very little experience riding horses. The team at Xotolar had us crossing rivers and galloping confidently. We have been two times, once in June 2018 and also September 2020.
Someone from the Ranch picks you up at your lodging and then they bring you to the ranch. You can milk the cows or just watch and help make the queso fresco. My 10 year old daughter was excited to eat the queso fresco again a few days ago after trying it in 2018. Tomas will teach you about growing up on the ranch and give you a tour of the kitchen where is mother cooked all of the family meals. Then on to the horses! These horses have walked the trail many times and know every footstep so we had confidence even going down the steep hills. The ranch had incredible views and even a canyon. Half way through there is a short stop at a tiny store in a little town. After another hour it is back to the ranch to enjoy an amazing lunch. When we were there in 2018 we enchiladas beans rice queso fresco and agua fresca de Jamaica. A few days ago we had the best Chile rellenos of our lives, the queso fresco which is also the best we have had, beans, rice, sopes (corn with beans and cheese) tortillas and pico de gallo made with some of the prickly pear xoconostle. It is the best food we eat in San Miguel de Allende.
I have some health issues this year and couldn't ride horses so one of the owners, Tomas, took me walking around the ranch for two hours. He cut prickly pear off the cactus for me to try. He also used his machete to dig up a wide variety of edible roots. He taught me so many things. It was a one of a kind experience. We LOVE Xotolar. A local gem full of history, wonderful experiences, people and delicious food.
Other horse back riding or Paseo en Caballo businesses might advertise better but THIS is the best. Others have accidents and many are owned by people who have not grown up on this land. The Morín family brings generations of expertise.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ There are not enough superlatives to describe this memorable experience, you will not be disappointed. My boyfriend and I booked the afternoon sunset ride and dinner at the rancho and we are keen to return for all of the activities they offer (full day ride, overnight camping, cooking class). Gustavo, his father Felix and cousin, Roberto lead us through their land, down to the canyon with many fun opportunities to cantor on the horses. Ultimately reaching a local tienda for a perfectly refreshing cerveza before heading back to the ranch. The sun dropped just behind the range on the horizon as we returned, a perfect setting. Dinner, cooked by Gustavo’s aunt was waiting for us. Hand made sopes over a wood burning stove, pico de gallo from cactus fruit, the best salsa you’ll ever have (they should really bottle and sell this stuff), beans, rice, and we opted to have both the Chile relleno (WOW) and enchilada (also WOW). But of course the star dish was the freshly made (as in that morning) cheese from their cows ?
Of our 7 weeks staying in San Miguel this was by far one of our favorite experiences and one we wish to share with friends and family in trips to come.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ What a great find! I had the best day here on the combo tour of the pyramids and then horse riding through the canyon.
Lio was a great guide for the day, and made sure I was comfortable throughout the horse ride. The views were spectacular and an authentic lunch was in listed as well.
I'd highly recommend this day trip or any of the other tours this family offer whilst in San Miguel
