★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I visited Yagul after visiting Mitla. While Mitla had it's points, I think Yagul was the more interesting of the two. It was also more difficult to reach without a car, but not too difficult. Much of the site is up on the side of a hill, and there are some very nice views of the valley below.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ It's a 40min ride from Oaxaca, will cost you 25pesos in a shared cab and it's worth it ! From the main road, you'll just have to walk 2km. The entrance costs 75pesos, except on Sundays when it's free for Mexicans and residents. This archeological site is really interesting and there's almost nobody up there. You can have a nice view over the valley, and you must not miss the "Fortaleza" which is the site's highest point where you can sit peacefully and enjoy the view.
I would have liked to have more explanation though.

July is a great time to visit the historical site Yagul in Oaxaca.
Our cab driver recommended this site due to the recent pandemic limited hours of other archeological sites having to close at 12.

This beautiful site, especially the hike that starts off the ruins area, is NOT open Thursday-Saturday at the present time. Yes, Google map times and the website conflict and we thought we would give it a go anyway on a Thursday. We found a path around the gate and hiked the road to the top but the guard there emphatically refused us to just hike the path to the top overlook and sent us back down the hill, watching until we got to the bottom. Best to keep checking for time changes on the govt site. It’s worth a trip. Take a picnic!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ After being closed for a while because of Covid-19 this site is open again to visit. A very nice place to go to. Small site with not a lot of people, very impressive.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Closed by gate at the end of the road on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Local families out recreating and lovely to walk around Mesa Caballito Blanco and to learn about the caves and general history right next door. You can look across the valley at the Yagul site.
