Zona Arqueológica de Toniná - 29950 Ocosingo

what an amazing place and so much fun to climb! this site has a small museum with a lot of info. the guards are kind and friendly. one even gave me a hand to get to the top. guides are available for hire at the entrance. it's a big place but i don't think you can get lost here. the best part is you won't find any souvenir vendors because it has so few visitor. if you are visiting San Cris, you should definitely add this to the list. it's very do-able by yourself. i took a coletivo from San Cris to Ocosingo for about 70 pesos which drop you off at the edge of town. from there you can take either a taxi to the ruins, or walk to the centro farmers market (15 min walk) for another coletivo for "las ruinas". just make sure you get back into town before the last coletivo leaves for San Cris (around 7pm).

Highest pyramid in meso america at 80 meters. Friendly reminder you cant use drones there. Also be sire to have cash with you. There is no payment by card at the entrance or the stores

Amazing views and architecture. They also have some of the original stucko that would have coated the hole building at one time. You can't go all the way to the top at the moment but 2/3 is still very impressive

Beautiful place. Almist no tourists at all, so no vendors or annoying mountain-lion-whistle's sellers. The site is petfectly preserved and has wonderful view! Higly reccomended.

A much underrated experience! Maybe it isn’t considered as impressive as Palenque, but it has a few things to say for it: the central pyramid is taller than the Sun Pyramid at Teotihuacán; there will be no more than a dozen other tourists at any given time; it’s in a beautiful mountain setting, which can be warm but not scorching hot; and best of all, it can be done as a day trip from the beautiful and charming (and affordable) San Cristóbal de las Casas.

Utterly wonderful and spectacular. Shouldn't be missed when planning a trip to Chiapas, because it's not overrun by tourists. Yet it's pyramid at 75m is the highest in Mesoamerica, higher than the pyramid of the sun in Teotihuacan. The Tonina site is gorgeous and beautifully maintained. We arrived at 7:15am and were allowed in at 7:30 (opening time is 8am) by the kind men at the entrance. This allowed us to experience it without seeing any person for the next 1.5 hours and enjoy the tranquility. Tonina was the absolute highlight of the trip in Chiapas (we did it last after Palenque, Yaxchilan and Bonampak).

Toninà is closed, closed, closed!!. Nothing to do with the virus- a land political dispute between surrounding landowners and México City's unwillingness to provide enough money for clean up leading into the park. It has been closed since before virus concerns. You can see it in the daytime from outside the park.

DO NOT COME here now or postpone your trip if you can if you are serious about visiting Maya sights! A very limited amount of the site is visitable currently because of "covid safety" (this is all outdoors and there aren't tons of visitors, this makes NO sense at all!). You only get access to the field in front of the platforms and no access to the platforms at all. (see the map I photographed to see how shocking this really is!). You're essentially paying for one viewpoint with no interaction or possibility to explore anything of the site at all (see photo). Tonina currently gets only about 20-25 visitors a day, and there's absolutely no justification for this. It's very inconsiderate towards those visitors who made a determined effort to get here. I am totally in favour of a safe visit from a health perspective, but it does need to make sense and be proportionate. INAH (who manages archeological sites in Mexico) needs to put its act together as this seems to be across the board. Honestly, the site is clearly beautiful, but it's impossible to appreciate it fully at the moment. Hopefully this will change soon but give it a pass for now.
