Sin embargo, se trata en realidad de curiosas formas geológicas (volcánicas y metamorficas). Estas formaciones naturales fueron utilizadas como un recinto de uso ceremonial exclusivamente, como lo atestigüan los números xicales o pocitos que los naturales tallaron. Un indicio de su valor ritual está en la alineación solar durante el equinoccio que se puede apreciar entre los monolitos. Su nombre deriva de la abundancia de aves rapaces que anidan en la zona, y probablemente se ahí venga el topónimo actual del municipio (Cuauhtlan O lugar de las Águilas). Una verdadera joya natural y cultural del suroeste de Jalisco.
