Cancun Light Tackle and Fly Fishing - 77509 Cancún

Jose is the man! He put me on a multitude of rolling tarpon and I was able to catch my first saltwater fish on the fly rod (as well as missing one in the 20+ pound range, which was my fault for not setting hard enough). He gave great direction as to where to cast (10 o' clock, 11o' clock, etc), put us in the right spots and was very patient and positive. Can't wait to come back next year!

My wife and I read several reviews and settled on Cancun Light Tackle and Fly fishing. I wanted to try my hand at salt water fly fishing and since my wife gets sea sick easily, this felt like the best option. We were impressed with the reviews we read and were excited for our trip. We booked a 3/4 day trip which ended up being with a guide named Mauricio. We went out and I told Mauricio that I'm proficient with fly fishing for trout (I have my own drift boat and fly fish regularly) but this was my first experience with salt water. I caught a small Jack on my 2nd or 3rd cast. I was asking for pointers and direction and got very little feedback from our guide. I asked if my wife could fish as well and he informed me that only one person can fish if they are fly fishing so at that point we switched to spinning set ups so we could both fish. Fishing so close against the mangroves, we got tangled up a few times. We basically felt like we were on our own. We both asked multiple times about where to cast, how fast to retrieve etc. He gave very little information. He said if your lure is on the bottom reel faster. That was the only direction he gave to us. Which wasn't much at all. I personally feel like we fished areas for way too long with no success. Mauricio was much more concerned about texting on his phone than anything to do with us. We were untangling our own lines, etc. Mauricio started fishing as well and wasn't getting anything either. We eventually ended up in an area we were catching Lady Fish. It was a welcome reprieve from having no bites and no fish for several hours. My wife and I both caught several Lady Fish. Mauricio didn't unhook or handle any of our fish. We were on our own which was pretty much the theme for the day. If we weren't proficient fisherman this would have been an extremely frustrating trip since he wasn't helping whatsoever. I've been on many guided trips before and unfortunately I have to say this was the worst experience I have ever had. I have had trips that I didn't catch many fish but learned a lot, had a good overall experience. This was basically a do it yourself trip for us. Mauricio drove the boat. That's pretty much where his involvement ended. The reviews we read from some of the other guides sounded great, but ours sounded like the few negative reviews we saw with the guide smoking, not helping etc. That was our experience with Mauricio.

Company is very responsive and easy to deal with. My son and I fished the lagoon with Noel. He was super knowledgeable, professional and cool to hang out with. We caught 20lb and 28lb jacks.

Had an amazing time with these Guys. Had fish hitting baits from first cast to the end of the day. Caught several species and some good sized fish. Such a great experience and would highly recommend going and spend a day or two fishing with this outfit. Guide know His fishing and His english.

Great guide service that is super knowledgeable about the local waters! Was lucky enough to have opportunities with tarpon, jack, snook, barracuda and more! They were very accommodating and would come back again!

I went out with them today and I don't know where to start. I'd give them 10/5 if I could. Noel, my guide, was awesome. He was super knowledgeable about the area, fishing techniques for different species, and was nothing but patient with me while I was figuring out the fly casting. I also talked to Martin, the owner, before coming. He directed me to the best trip for what I wanted to do and I'm 1000% glad I listened. I spent a month or so looking at different guides before I booked with these guys. I definitely made the right choice. I already booked a second trip with them while I'm here this time, and I'm going with them when I'm back next year.

If you're planning on fly fishing, bring your own gear. I've tried them twice now, both with guide Jose. What's interesting is both outfits "Cancun Fly Fishing" and "Cancun Light Tackle and Fly Fishing" are the same thing. I've booked both and both times ended up with the same guide, Jose with same boat... etc. The last trip, Martin supplied two rods. Once we got out on the water, we noticed the large eyelet on the rod was broken. So luckily we had the other rod. That rod's fly line was so bad it wouldn't shoot through the guides. Jose could see it as well. So he called the other guide and we met him out on the water and changed out the rods with an extra one he had. I find it a bit inexcusable to promote using the best equipment, to then get out on the water and be stuck with old junk that hasn't been well taken care of. The fly lines felt like they were 10 years old. I'll note that Jose is super nice but was a bit limited on advice. Only tips were, "Cast to the mangroves". Over and over. So my suggestions if you're planning on booking a trip is to use your own gear, and don't expect a whole lot of advice. But Jose and the other guide will find the fish. You just need to catch them!

Had a great early morning till midday trip, catching 6-7 species. Friendly guide who knows the right spots to fish. Nice boat and equipment!
