Such a fun experience and the food was wonderful. We did the Prehispanic cuisine course where we learned how to cook four different dishes and a couple different tortillas. Chef Oscar walked us through each recipe and explained the historical background for the food and culture, which helps you appreciate the food even more. I was pleasantly surprised to have free beer and meszal tastings included as part of the class. After we finished the cooking portion of the class Chef Oscar promptly emailed us the recipes and printed up nice cooking certificates with our names. Note: if you've already checked out the local markets then Chef Oscar's 2 hour evening classes are probably the best value for a cooking class in Oaxaca at only $40. Chef Oscar does also offer and a highly rated (on TripAdvisor) class with a market tour for $65.

My wife and I spent a fantastic day with Chef Oscar in late Nov/21. The group was a little larger than we’d expected (12 people, probably the max of the facility), but they were all wonderful people and added to the experience. The group voted on what turned out to be a fantastic menu of 4 fresh salsas, 3 kinds of tortillas, two moles, tamales, chilli rellenos and even Oaxaca chocolate ice cream! The entire experience, including a trip to a local market to purchase some of the ingredients was about 4.5 hours, so be prepared for that (we had assumed we’d be eating around noon, but really didn’t start until about 1:30). Incredible food, and a great experience.

Not a bad experience, and the food is very tasty and you get offered plenty of mezcal. However, definitely feels like a routine exhibition - you don't get to do much cooking beyond putting ingredients in a blender and the odd bit of frying, the visit to the market is informative but you don't actually buy anything, and the food portions for lunch are actually pretty small! Not worth the cost, for sure, and I've rarely left a cooking class hungry.

Pros: Oscar knows a lot of facts, free flowing drinks Cons: expensive, easy to see how some people find Oscar rude, not a cooking class more of a demonstration, not enlightening as every recipe ends with putting stuff in a blender, really small amounts of food, food not particularly tasty (very average in fact). What really took the biscuit for me was when we all took turns frying a single clove of garlic in a pan. Or take the ice cream, for which the recipe is simply ‘put all ingredients in a blender and churn’. Oscar had also already done most of the prep himself, which somewhat defeats the point of a class. We had a nice group, so an enjoyable day, but were expecting so much more. Please just have people use a pestle and mortar you have two hours and many hands, there’s really no need for vitamix 101

Amazing experience with chef Oscar and his assistant . The day started off with a simple breakfast of bread and coffee or chocolate . Then off to the market to buy the ingredients for the special lunch. Oscar took his time explaining every detail and was very patient with us. After we went back to the kitchen and started cooking. Oscar and his assistant were absolutely wonderful . Every step was explained in detail to us which we truly appreciated. After all the food was cooked . We were sat a table in the patio , the table was very elegant and beautiful! The meal was absolutely delicious. Honestly could not have asked for a better afternoon. Worth every cent! Would certainly consider Casa Crespo a must do when in Oaxaca!

Wow, Chef Oscar exceeded our expectations. The explanatory visit to the local market after working out a menu to please us was so helpful. And then, the six course meal we learned to and helped to prepare was outstanding. Tacos, 3 salsas, mole, enchiladas, avocado soup, ice cream with Oaxacan chocolate...wow!

This was an amazing experience! A casual introduction to food prep and local ingredient vocabulary. The market tour was educational as well. You will make new friends, discover delicious new flavors and have the recipes waiting in your inbox to try at home. Kudos to all the staff at Casa Crespo!

Had a great time exploring the markets and cooking many dishes with Oscar. He’ll send you home with electronic copies of all the recipes you cook, which is great, because with the number of dishes we cooked and ate in such a short period of time, it would be impossible to remember it all. Not only was Oscar friendly and educational, but his team was also very helpful and worked hard to make sure the kitchen space stayed clean throughout all the meal prep. Would recommend!
