Banderas Bay is considered Mexico’s largest natural bay at 42 km across.  It is also the largest in North America, the seventh-largest in the world, and is one of the deepest bays in the world at more than 500 meters deep.  Banderas Bay is located between the states of Jalisco and Nayarit.   It is home to the popular city of Puerto Vallarta, a rapidly growing international tourist destination.

On the far southern end of the Bay (Jalisco) lies Cabo Corrientes, to the north (Nayarit) is Punta de Mita, and near the center lies the mouth of the Ameca River, a natural division between the states.  Located just minutes north of Puerto Vallarta’s International Airport, Riviera Nayarit is one of Mexico’s most beautiful tropical beach destinations.  It is defined by nearly 200 miles of pristine Pacific coastline dotted with dozens of unique, seaside coastal towns and pueblos.

The majestic Sierra Madre Occidental mountains lie east and parallel to the coast, home to jaguars, wild boars, armadillos, parrots, macaws, hawks, and a multitude of migratory bird species.  Mexico’s Riviera Nayarit hosts lush rainforest- covered mountain peaks, natural sanctuaries for marine turtles and  hump back whales, tranquil palm-fringed beaches of golden sands, offshore islands, and a wonderful combination of luxurious resort hotels and more rural, rustic adventure accommodations.  The Huichol indigenous culture permeates the region as well, whose people are renowned for their vibrantly colored bracelets, rings and necklaces of glass beads, all representative of their visions of the cosmos and its spirits.
