★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Se dice que en la antigüedad clásica, la sociedad griega excluía a los ciegos condenándolos al destierro en una isla llamada Tiflos, donde perecerían sin esperanza ni ayuda de nadie. Actualmente, se conoce como tiflología al estudio, tratamiento y análisis científico de la ceguera, seguramente en un intento por resarcir tan terrible historia sobre aquella infausta isla del Mar Egeo. En nuestro país, se debe a la generosidad, dedicación y esfuerzo de un Ministro de Hacienda, la creación de la Escuela Nacional de Ciegos que hasta hoy lleva su nombre: Ignacio Trigueros. Este veracruzano ilustre nació en 1805, y a los 25 años fue nombrado regidor del Ayuntamiento de su estado natal, y desde entonces comenzó para él una carrera política meteórica que lo llevó a recibir el cargo de Secretario de Hacienda en los gobiernos de Antonio López de Santa Anna, Nicolás Bravo, Valentín Canalizo y José Joaquín Herrera. Y más aún, durante el Segundo Imperio de Maximiliano y Carlota fue gobernador del Distrito Federal, y así conoció en 1865 a Eduardo Huet Merlo, un francés sordo, iniciador de la educación especial para sordos, quien le propuso la creación de una escuela para sordomudos, la cual inauguró al año siguiente. Inspirado en esta labor, buscó la apertura de una escuela para invidentes, salvando obstáculos como la falta de fondos y personal especializado, lo que lo llevó a aprender a leer y escribir en el sistema Braille para traducirlo del francés al español, todo ello, echando mano de sus propios recursos. En 1870, todavía en calidad de Presidente del Ayuntamiento de la Ciudad de México abrió la Escuela para Ciegos “Lic. Ignacio Trigueros”. Al año siguiente, la administración del presidente Juárez cedió parte del Convento de la Enseñanza para la instalación de la escuela, además de implementar medidas tributarias para su financiamiento. Ignacio Trigueros murió en 1879, contento de contribuir a la educación especial, su legado pervive en la calle de Mixcalco, bajo la administración de la Secretaría de Educación Pública.
