Got robbed by the police outside of our apartment on Calle 35 and avenida 10. We were walking home and they drove up behind us, stopped up, searched us and took all the money in our wallets. After 11pm be sure to take a taxi and not walk on the streets as the police will stop you and rob you. Happened to others met too.

Aviso a turistas.

¡Muchas gracias!
Since my credit card was stolen, I went to the police station to file a complaint. Since I unfortunately don't speak Spanish (yet) and unfortunately nobody at the police station speaks English, I communicated with the Google simultaneous translator. It turned out that I had to report it to another administration. Instead of sending me on my way, I was driven straight there. The police officer also made sure I lined up at the right places and the administrative officers were clear on what was at stake. Since you are not allowed to accept cash at the office (only cards, but I didn't have them anymore), I couldn't pay the administration fee (approx. 5€) in cash. In short, I was driven to the nearest supermarket and was able to pay the fee into an administrative account with an official(!) deposit order. The ad was then recorded with the deposit receipt (this time translated by me with DeepL from Cologne). Then I had the signed, stamped and official confirmation of the report in my hands. I was then driven back to the original police station. And what happened after that? I was very kindly wished all the best and I went back to my accommodation. Nobody asked me for money! When I (!) asked for something like a "coffee register" because of all the circumstances, they rejected it very politely, but also very firmly. I cannot speak for everyone in the police station or for the entire local police force, and I cannot rule out the possibility of negative experiences with the police. But I have had a consistently positive experience with this matter, which is definitely worth mentioning! ¡Muchas gracias!

Thanks to all these comments and to the fact that one of my best friends, the Mexican police have detained him for no reason and they demanded dollars to release him, I am not going to go to Playa del Carmn. It's a shame because I wanted to go but if you're a good person and you have to take care of the police there's something VERY wrong

I was harrased by the police in Playa Del Carmen, 3 times! Each time they asked for money. An absolute terrifying experience

I was robbed right out side of the Scotiabank on 10th right after taking money out of the machine... Here is the kicker; IT WAS THE POLICE THAT ROBBED ME! 3am on October 15 2020, I went to the bank to see if I could get the tape from the CCTV and they told me I need to make a report with the police lol... It’s getting very bad in Playa, I’ve only been living here two weeks and this is the third time the police have taken money from me but this time they waited until I went to the bank and took all of my cash that I withdrew. Who do you go to for help when the police are this corrupt?
