★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Please let me rate less than one star... My experience with Europcar Tulum has been the worst. First off, they did not have the car which I reserved - manual instead of automatic. I prepaid for the basic liability coverage through Europcar.com.mx, however when I arrived they told me this was not valid. They required me to pay for their in-store insurance, which was 4x the cost of the package offered online (which I had already paid for). They then claimed that the insurance I bought directly from them was invalid because my original booking was made through kayak.com and they do not support 3rd party insurance - but the thing is, I bought this directly from the Europcar website.
The staff was incredibly combative, and it felt as though they did not believe that I had bought the insurance on the website, even though I did so right in front and their eyes and showed them the proof. Horrendous service. I assume most car rental companies are similar in Tulum, and that is saddening.
I walked out, leaving the car and my payments behind... Can't deal with these people. Currently trying to get a refund.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I reserved a car on Dec 28. EuropCar charged my Amex 136.55 USD. When I arrived to pickup my car they did not have any cars. They would not refund me. I had to dispute the charge with Amex. Do not do business with them.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The worst place to rent a car. they are a few compagny in the same building, they all have air conditionning. they got it too but it was'nt working. the guy told us he would be with us in 5 minutes we waited one hour and a half and then left.they were only 2 clients in front of us. we came back because all the others compagny were out of compact cars and we already had a reservation from internet. when we came back he let us wait for 30 minutes before telling us that he is going for his lunch break. we lost half a day just to rent a car... the car was clean and working.i would pay more to have a little bit more services.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ They try to rip you off although you made a reservation and paid up front they try to offer you another car with the story that its not sure if and when the car which you reserved will arrive. 5 minutes later many of these cars arrived at location. Other people paid for their car and insurance and had to take another 1000 usd insurance since the warranty would not apply since it was booked from another country. Beware of being scammed

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Had a very good experience. Having left the nearby Hertz disappointed at their attempts to forcibly upsell a more expensive car to us, we went over the road to Europcar. Without a reservation, we left with the small economical car that we had been looking for, with the basic insurance that we needed, at a reasonable price. We paid about 350 dollars for a Chevrolet Beat for 9 days. No issues with the car or rental process. Very good experience.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ To everyone concerned with the reviews or hesitating to use the Europcar’s services - please do not worry! We rented a car for 2 days without any issues at all. The booking process itself was done entirely remotely with the fees for the rental and insurance covered online.
Based on the reviews online we were really worried about the process of picking up the car in Tulum (there were reports that the personnel insists on additional insurance coverage etc). In reality, everything went completely smoothly - the whole process is highly automated because the staff just goes through a predefined process by using the Europcar app on their iPad. No one insisted on additional insurances or other upselled products.
The only thing which surprised us a bit was the deposit (1.333 usd instead of 1.000 usd as we thought) and the fact that if you use a debit card instead of credit card you will need to pay around 60 usd as the commission for the bank. Please also make sure to have your driver licence and a passport with you.
Other than that we simply ensured to make photos and a video of any scratches on the car beforehand and… we were good to go!
Fortunately we had no issues after hitting the road. When we came back the personnel’s review of the car was really quick. The employee checked the fuel level, gave a quick look if the car is generally in fine condition and after two iPad signatures (as part of a contract closing) the process was over.
The car return took place yesterday and I am still waiting for the deposit fee to be given back (the employee informed that the deposit return process was already initiated). I suppose now max. couple of days need to pass by to get the deposit back.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Worst service ever! They just want to still money from you. I went on time to return my car and they where closed the following day they overcharged me for that extra day and for damages that where already in the car. Please note if you need to return the car-They open late and close early. Mr. Sergio Romero was very rude with me and very disrespectful. Cero tolerance on women. I was with my baby trying to get some help and understanding from Mr Romero and Europcar and they just don’t hear me and overcharged me! Be careful don’t go there!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Had a great experience with Europcar in Tulum.
We booked our car online. The process in store was very quick. Just had to show all the documents (passport, driver license etc.) and sign the contracts. The guy was very friendly. Unlike other stories here, he didn’t forced us to buy an extra insurance.
I was also worried after all the reviews, to rent a car there. But everything went perfectly.
The car was ready immediately when we arrived. Total process was like 10 minutes in total.
The guy working there was really helping. He helped us to take photos of the car and showed us all the damages.
He even helped us to drop off the car at our hotel in Akumal, where they had a Europcar store as well! It was a nice service!
He was really friendly and I would rent a car again!
We totally had no problems. It was perfect.
Only thing which I didn’t like was: We got the car half full of fuel and had to return it the same level. Which could be challenging but we managed it great.
I normally do not write reviews but I was so scared of all the reviews, for anyone renting here!
