Hacia finales del siglo XVIII la hacienda de "San José y Nuestra Señora de Belén" tenía diversos usos, fue hasta la época porfiriana que se dedicó exclusivamente a fabricar hilados y tejidos, y con el tiempo cambiaría de nombre por "San José de los Molinos".
En 1889 Juan Mier y Rubín dueño de la hacienda, formó una sociedad junto con Manuel Pérez Díaz y Cándido Mier Pérez denominada "Cándido Mier Pérez y Compañía", con el objeto de instalar una fábrica de hilados y tejidos en la finca, misma que inició sus trabajos en 1900, al fallecer el señor Mier y Rubín en 1906, dejó como única heredera a su esposa Claudina Fernández.
