I passed this store, Ropa Lizeth Hidalgo, or just Lizeth Caballero - Damas - Niños clothes, every day of the many days I was in Oaxaca. What caught my eye was the sign out front from time to time "New Paca Hoy." This signalled that a new bail of used (and possibly remaindered new) clothes had been purchased, prepared and was now being made available in the store to the buying public. This purchase by local stores of this clothing donated by people elsewhere for the poor is probably the best source of low-cost clothing in Central America. And as far as these stores go, nothing is wrong with this. But it should be understood that the charity of ordinary people, say, in the United States, is being capitalized and made the foundation of profits in both the US and abroad. When you give a dress or shirt to Goodwill, you're not thinking that that shirt will be bundled randomly with other clothing and then sold to clothing merchants and speculators all about the globe. I didn't, at least. This clothing does lead to a number of practices with respect to clothing abroad and may explain why so many Mexicans and Guatemalans go about with such mysterious English slogans on their clothing. In addition to used clothing, multinational clothing manufacturers sell new but end-of-season or discontinued styles to merchants in Central America. Lizeth may sell only this new clothing, only the paca or bailed used clothing or both. But paca is a common sartorial expression for the bails of donated clothes.
