Incredibly beautiful views and a lot of potential at this hotel! Panoramic views of the mountains because the hotel is at the literal summit. You navigate a narrow dirt road for 10 minutes and arrive at the top. Every room has a view. Breakfast included and nice touches like chopped up mango and peanuts and a shot of mezcal when we arrived. There’s a small restaurant where you can request what you want for dinner on site. We got delicious memelitas with tea. We did a tamascal experience with a massage - based on a ritual sauna type experience where you sit and a guide keeps upping the heat by throwing hot water onto steamy rocks. We had read a lot of scary experiences but this was pretty tame and no religious overtones. They struggled to keep heat in as it seemed like we were early users of it. So we got off easy. They have a lot of logistical kinks to work out. There were many confusing moments throughout that were a stressful, which comes with the territory of traveling sometimes. Beware cash is king here - for now there are no credit card terminals or effective digital pay options that will satisfy the offsite management. When we arrived, the staff there weren’t aware we’d booked on Bookings.com and were confused we were there. They told us later they could find no record of our booking and we had to pull up our receipt 3 times to affirm we paid. The staff on site were trying their best to triangulate the orders of offsite bosses and we felt bad for them. E.g. for the tamascal, we explicitly asked if we could PayPal as we lacked sufficient cash ($3000 MX) and one woman who arranged the sauna / massage told us yes. We paid her and got caught in a 3-day review on PayPal Xoom. The staff had to get on the phone with some off site manager and seemed caught in the middle. We ended up having to drive all the way to Mitla with a kind staff member to give her the full $3000 pesos for the experience and cancel the Xoom. I wish I’d taken hundreds with me and just been ready to handle it all in cash. There’s no ATM near by - closest is Mitla or Tlacolula. Would recommend and I hope they hash out the weird logistics around money and booking. But we felt very welcome and the scenery is to die for!
