What we Do
SouthernXposure is much more than ‘the premier’ guide service in Mexico. We are developing the areas, the routes and the infrastructure on terrain that is destined to become the focal point for the best climbing not only in Mexico but also encompassing all of the northern continent from Canada to Central America.
Our Mission
At SouthernXposure we guide the best routes on the best rock in Mexico while building a base of eco-tourism that will provide sustainable jobs for Mexican families local to the areas we frequent. From sun up to the moment you lay your head down to sleep everything is localized to the towns we inhabit.
The artesian artwork purchased in Bernal after a day of climbing is made in Bernal. The cheese, wine, and pastries in Aculco are produced from cows, grapes, and bakeries in and around Aculco. The climbing area in Jilotepec is Ajidal and it is owned by a farmers union that dates back to the second revolution of Pancho Villa. We as a guide service promote land stewardship and are working with El Ajido de Jilotepec to develop infrastructure at this beautiful area sustainably, while providing an income stream for these farmers to use for future improvements which include erosion control on the climbing and hiking trails, improvements on the roads leading to the cliffs, and a fund to change out aging gear on existing routes.
Climbing with SouthernXposure is more than just a yearly climbing trip. Spending time with our professional guides is an excursion into the future of climbing as we know it. We are at the forefront of sustainable activities between land owners and climbers. We are building a future for the next generation of locals to take pride in what they do to prosper, while embracing their local heritage. His Rakkup guides are the best written source of information in English for Pena de Bernal and Aculco; I would highly recommend them. We completed the “Triple Crown” of climbing in Mexico over the course of a week and it was nothing short of amazing. Simeon and his partner Carlos are wonderful guides. They are detail-oriented and have a wealth of climbing knowledge.
Some of the areas we went climbing in had amazing restaurants and places to visit for recreation. I highly recommend this guide service if you’re looking to climb and visit wonderful Mexico!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ If you're considering a guide for climbing in Mexico they are the ones! I researched a lot and found it hard to get any info. I wanted to climb somewhere reachable from Mexico City. Once I connected with Simeon via email I finally had a flood of information from him! Simeon and his guides are so crazy knowledgeable of Central Mexico (and then some, they know crags all over the world and have set routes all over). Our guide Carlos Mac was so great, we went out two days with him and learned so much! He also took some really great photos of us which is great because I did NOT want to take my phone out much when we were 200ft in the air. We've both cleaned and lead sport routes before, but Mac elevated what we knew to another level. Now we're more confident problem solving and even are comfortable to start practicing and preparing for multipitch. If you're looking for a trustworthy knowledgeable guide service seriously, these are your guys.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We had such a great experience with Carlos. My wife gained the confidence she needed to lead after the great teaching that was provided. She was then able to on-site lead a difficulty that she was not comfortable doing outdoors, including setting up various types of equalized anchors and also safe rappel techniques. I have been lead climbing for a few years and still learned quite a bit of new information that I asked for, including: how to abandon a climb leaving minimal gear, French and American style rappel and auto blocks, mule knot, and even creating an improvised stick clip using a trekking pole. We climbed in Jilotepec and we started off the trip with breakfast at a delicious diner near the crag and ended with a stop to a local store to get some of the local cheese. The rock and setting was fantastic quality and with practically zero approach! Communication was also very quick! We would come back any time to climb again with Carlos and Simeon!

The communication leading up to the trip was flawless as we determined what would make our personalized experience just right. Carlos guided us on our last climbing day as we attempted (and succeeded) our first multi pitch.
