★ ★ ★ ★ ★ All taxi prices in town are regulated by the syndicate (just google: TARITAXI Playa del Carmen), and mentioned on a sign as well. Since most tourists are unaware of these pre-defined price system, drivers who pick up tourists close to 5th Avenue usually charge much more than what would comply to their syndicate's own rules. Hence, don’t take a taxi from here but walk a few hundred meters towards 30th Avenue, and you will be charged much less. Still, most drivers try to have you pay more than you’d have to; simply refer to TariTaxi and they will let pay the same price they would charge a local. (Ideally, you already know how much that is by looking at their website mentioned above.)
