I was 27 years old when I decided to go abroad my alabama roots to school after a spanish classroom visit telling us to sign up in 1997. I used savings bonds my mother had purchased when I was a youngster that had matured and able to be cashed and converted to mexican peso dollar currency for tuition and living quarters contract with a mexican family renting a single bedroom in their home near the la minerva statute or re: the arcs once the entrance into that second largest city next to mexico city being largest. I visited many other neighboring cities for class room discussions like the silver mine city of guanajuato and puerto vallarta and acapulco on a boat ride with some other classmates during one 15 year old party celebration. The pacific ocean is a salty as the rims of the free drinks you get in rhe clubs once you pay to enter which I skipped and opted for a soda with umbrella straw to look the part socially. The city was in that state of Jalisco I noticed very clean when walking about a mile and half to school every morning passing the policemen guarding the corners with long guns luckily never pointed at me directly but always got a slight nod and cracked smile by one and neither the one I had to say no to lunch with outside Versace the italian designer yellow house I was allowed to take photographs of roped off with yellow crime scene tape in 1997 after his Florida death that summer month. My senora Dosal drove me by Versace residence in Guadalajara on the way to the market. She cooked some delicious authentic foods and even tried to cook american hot oatmeal cereal but used cold milk instead I thought still a great gesture of respect to try to infuse some home for me while away in a foreign attached country with no english to read or speak unless on the pay telephone talking to my mother back in the united states of america my teacher wanted me to include the mexican states of america in my answer of discussion. My senor father of the house had a stroke working for kodak company in California so exhausted all their savings used to pay for help getting his memory loss restored so they opted for people to live with them rather than a hotel i suppose was a great reason. I am an only child raised in a single family home but enjoyed their family including the extended family members who visited plus they offered me a job teaching English and a nice house on the street behind theirs because the elder mother was aging and about to join back together in their home life. I had given my word to return to my daycare job so that's what I did and don't regret losing my sick days at that job upon my return to Alabama because I loved the children I was held responsible for caring for everyday with great parents who were always very nice and communicated with me about thing. It was a culture shock in total immersion of spanish life I expected but managed to survive. That was the only catholic church service ever attended at was in Spanish not Baptist English and not forced to go with them. The landscapes and cathedral buildings were dramatically different from treelined Alabama known it's diverse trees namely the longleaf pine state tree. But rhe Guadalajara city of roses certainly was magnificent to get lost walking to destinations at times so I always made a point in those cases to use my 10 second timer and snap a selfie in case would not be found back to civilization they might have some record of my location. I usually went to a movie or shopped in different areas for my entertainment after school to ensure I did not burden people with my deficiencies in language barriers. There were plenty of atm machines and banks to withdraw money and I kept a copy of my passport and number to the embassy for emergency when the house telephone was disconnected and communication lessened. I always had the school center for foreign students that could contact the only other administrator dr. Bermudez- ballin from my hime state of alabama accompanying her group of students that passed her history class I was failed and dropped from that
