Just as the Wixarika culture has its different customs, traditions, deities, etc… The Zapotec culture, predominant in the state of Oaxaca de Juarez, tells us about their culture through the Tonas and Nahuales. Let’s talk about the difference between them; Tonas are those figures that can represent a person, specifically in the personality of this, is that Zapotec figure that will always accompany the person and this depends on the date on which the person was born. The Nahuales, which are people that transform into a certain animal, within the Zapotec culture, these figures are the ones that guide the person in life.
Oaxacan artists, by means of carved wood and painting, preserve these figures, decorating them with ornaments, or designs that their culture has left for them. These ornaments are captured in the figures and are also colorful designs in some cases, depending on the style of the artist.
This art of wood carving and decoration can be found mainly in the community of San Martin Tilcajete, where there are families with wonderful carving and decoration styles, creating unique works, for example:

  • Jacobo & Maria Ángeles.
  • Julia Fuentes & J.Juan.
  • Manuel Jiménez.

The best gallery for tribal art in PV by far in my opinion. This is where the real stuff is, not the tourist versions.

A magical space with spectacular Huichol art, including a historical section of pieces not normally seen in more touristy galleries. Most definitely worth a visit!

Part of the Thursday night Art walk in Old Town is this wonderful addition to the Peyote People gallery. Hubby and I always look for a small piece of art to remember our trip by This exquisite little creature called to me when we visited the Colectika gallery in Puerto Vallarta on our recent trip and I just had to bring him home. San Martin Tilcajete in Oaxaca is one of the most famous villages for the traditional wood carvings. This mouse is Hand Carved from One Piece of Copal Tree Wood. Meticulously Hand Painted,Signed on Bottom by Artisan Issac Fabian.

Colectika is one of my favorite galleries in PV. Kevin is one of the most knowledgeable people I have met about the indigenous people (huichol) in PV. The quality of the art he carries is unsurpassed. And he is an extremely nice guy! This is not the cheap knock-off art that so many of the places here sell. High quality- you will learn something ever time you go in.

Best in PV. Their access to the top artistry is phenomenal. Yet, the people are warm and personable. This is the one.
